Attempted Suicide

Our client, a 27-year-old man with schizophrenia, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital on a 5150 hold after a suicide attempt. Despite being a known suicide risk, he was left unsupervised and attempted to hang himself using a bedsheet. By the time staff found him, he had suffered cardiac arrest and prolonged oxygen deprivation. He survived but was left permanently and severely cognitively impaired, requiring 24-hour care for the rest of his life. This case settled confidentially for $3,000,000.00.
