Our client, an elderly woman with advanced Alzheimer’s disease, was a resident at an assisted living facility. She was entirely dependent on staff for personal care and hygiene. Despite repeated concerns raised by family, the facility failed to maintain even basic hand hygiene and range of motion care. Over time, her fingernails became severely overgrown, eventually piercing the skin of her palm and leading to a serious infection. Surgical intervention was required, but she ultimately developed sepsis and passed away. This case settled confidentially for $550,000.00.
